My brother-in-law is looking for a new car. What do you guys recommend? Criteria:
$12k max
commuter car: high fuel economy, good for stop and go traffic
plug-in won’t really work for him
comfy, his wife’s Corolla ‘S’ if too harsh of a ride
4 dr, Automatic
these are some links he has sent me:

Describe the commute: Heavy stop & go? Heavy urban driving?
A CPO 3rd-gen Prius is a good choice for a commute with lots of stop & go or urban driving.
Otherwise I’d lean towards Cam/Cord for one that’s got a lot of highway driving.

Nothing says comfy like an old Buick. He could probably find a nice LaCrosse or something for under $12k.

Used Jetta ? I’ve driven one and pretty much didn’t notice anything about it. They drive okay and the interiors are “nicer” than its Japanese and Korean counterparts. Sounds like its right up his alley.

i see you made allroad plural as I would need more than one to be able to get to work on a daily basis.

Kia Forte/Optima are both easily found in that price range, the Prius would also be a good option.

I’d say pick up the iM. It’s a nice understated hatch that comes in a bunch of nice colors. The only issue is that the automatics apparently suck big time in them.

You didn’t mention fuel economy. Is it a short (distance) commute?

Gosh. Doesn’t really matter, then. I say tell him to pick his favorite color of any Hyundai, Kia, Honda, or Toyota. Otherwise, there’s just no criteria to support a specific model.
